Yup. I said it. Summer is stupid and I can’t wait until it is over and we move into fall. All winter long, I hear people everywhere saying “I can’t wait for summer.” Well, it is here and it is miserable. Let’s listen to me rant take a look at a couple of reasons why.
Reason number one: yardwork! You know what you don’t have to do in late fall and winter? That is right, yardwork. It’s right there in the name . . . —-work. Who in their right mind likes things that end in “work”? And it is relentless – week in and week out, there is always more yardwork. And it is not like you are making anything better by the yardwork you are doing – you are just returning it to how it looked a week ago. Seems kind of pointless and dumb if you ask me.
Reason number two: all the people who “can’t wait for summer” always want to do one thing – go to the beach. Well, I’ve got news for you – the beach is stupid too!! ** insert loud collective gasp here **. Now, I know, there are a large number of people who might disagree with me about that statement. But here is what you have to keep in mind about them – they are wrong! They don’t mean to be wrong. They are trying hard. They honestly think they like the beach. But when they get to the beach, what do they do? They complain “Ugh, the sand got everywhere”, “Ugh, the sand is too hot”, “Ugh, I said ‘ugh’ again”. So, I’m trying (not very hard mind you) to understand – if you are complaining about the sand and that is the main component of the beach, what exactly do you like about the beach? I’m sure you are thinking, “Don, aren’t you forgetting about the other part of the beach . . . the water?” Oh, you mean the water where you can’t see what is in it and some of those things in it just might like to have a little nibble on you now and then or a sting if they are a creepy little jellyfish? Is that the water you are talking about? Yes, the waves are fun to watch and listen to, even I will admit that. But chlorine exists for a reason and that is the water we should be getting in to. Unless you are Bonnie the Boss who thinks there are too many people/germs in pool water. But you know what else is stupid? No, not Bonnie the Boss. She might beat me up if I said that and given the fact that she does triathlons while I get winded running to the fridge, I don’t like my odds. So now I don’t remember what else is stupid.
Reason number three: The Heat. Or the humidity. The heatmidity. Whichever answer helps the “summer-lovin’” people sleep better at night. Either way, “summer-lovers” wait all winter for summer, and now here it is, 95 degrees out with 90% humidity and what do they want to do? Eat outside? Nope, too hot. Play some pickleball? Nope, too hot. Go to a concert at night? Nope, too hot and sticky. All they want to do is stay inside where it is cool. Hmmmm, you mean kinda like fall? Nobody I have spoken too enjoys becoming a hot, sweaty mess and even fewer people I have spoken to want to be sitting/standing next to someone who is a hot, sweaty mess. Summer is great as a concept, but much like fruitcake, is better as a thought than actual reality. Lately, it has been almost too hot to even golf. Speaking of which . . .
You know what else is dumb (besides summer, the beach, but not Bonnie the Boss)? Golf!!! And this has nothing to do with my last five rounds. Ok, maybe that is a lie, but that doesn’t mean that I am wrong. I (sort of) know how to hit a golf ball. And I (sometimes) swing the same way each shot I take. So, you would think that I could reasonably expect my golf shots to look the same from shot to shot. But do they? Nooooooooooooooooooooooo . . . . not even close!!! Some go left, some go right, some dribble along the ground and some decide they are nature lovers and go for a little stroll in the woods. Some somehow find a way to do all four of those things all at once. Forrest Gump said life is like a box of chocolates. But he didn’t mention anything about golf. But here is what really gets me. If you do almost any other activity, people are interested in hearing about it. Went to a show/movie – how was it? Went on a trip somewhere – tell me all about it. Played a round of golf? Nobody wants to hear about that. You start telling somebody about your round of golf and you can see their soul leave their body. Even other golfers don’t want to hear about your round of golf. They are not even actually listening to you when you tell them about it, they are only patiently waiting for you to finish so that they can tell you about their round of golf, which you in turn will not listen to either. How dumb is an activity that no one wants to listen to you talk about?
There you have it – some of the reasons why summer (and golf) are stupid. But summer doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. So if you are going to have to suffer through summer (or golf), the least you can do is have some good wine to help you through it. And my recommendation for this week is Greenhill Vineyard’s 2025 Rose. With hints of tangerine and white peach on the nose, bright acidity and notes of watermelon and dried strawberry on the palate, it is the perfect wine to sip on while wishing it were fall. If you are going to get some though, you better go visit soon as this usually sells out quickly!
Anyways, I realize not all of you will feel the same way about these topics as I do. But that is ok, I still like you. Just don’t stand too close to me if you’ve been enjoying too much summer. Cheers!
